VCAS for Internet TV Features Enhanced HLS Security

Part of the transition of OTT adaptive streaming from low value content to premium pay-TV services is the application of commercial grade content and revenue security.  It is imperative to be able to provide the equivalent levels of revenue protection and delivery control on a streaming system as operators and content owners demand in traditional pay-TV delivery systems, such as DVB and IPTV.

As the leading IPTV content security supplier, Verimatrix has applied its extensive experience in protecting premium TV services delivered over IP networks.  VCAS™ for Internet TV provides a complete digital TV security solution for OTT services (as depicted below) over networks implementing the HTTP Live Streaming protocol.  Featuring multi-format support, VCAS for Internet TV secures OTT services to multiple screens and across multiple transports, including both broadcast (linear) and video-on-demand (VoD) delivery modes.

The solution features several enhancements to the baseline HLS protocol, including:

  • Unique device ID and client-side X.509 certificate
  • Two-way mutual authentication
  • Secure key management protocol
  • Client device output protection and copy control
  • iOS “jail-break” and Android “rooting” detection and reporting
  • Frequent and configurable key rotation
  • Clone detection and reporting
  • Full entitlement check before keys are delivered to client
  • Head-end domain management
  • Client robustness enhancements
These features are provided as standard in the VCAS for Internet TV solution, making it highly suitable to protect OTT  TV services and revenue.

In addition, the VCAS MultiRights™ framework enables secure content distribution to off-the-shelf CE and mobile devices with native media players and non-Verimatrix DRM clients, including Microsoft PlayReady DRM.  The Verimatrix MultiRights for PlayReady DRM solution offers several features and benefits to new and existing VCAS customers, including full integration for linear and on-demand digital TV content delivery to a variety of device types supporting the Microsoft Smooth Streaming adaptive bitrate protocol.

RGB’s Advanced Digital Video Applications

RGB's advanced video processing and modulation technologies enable a wide variety of digital video applications that address the most critical issues facing video service providers today, including delivering video to the rapidly-growing number of end-user devices, optimizing the precious bandwidth that is available and generating new revenue. With RGB's unique solutions, operators have the tools they need to fight the competitive battle that will keep them ahead in the rapidly changing video delivery market.

OTT Delivery

As traditional telecommunications providers rapidly move into the business of delivering video services, they require a video processing partner that can provide the video expertise that can only come from years of hands-on experience.

RGB Networks not only understands video processing, but we also understand the technological, architectural and economical challenges that are faced by telco IPTV providers as they prepare their infrastructure for high-quality video delivery. Whether you're delivering services over managed IP networks or unmanaged over-the-top (OTT) networks, RGB's Video Multiprocessing Gateway (VMG™) has been designed from the ground up to specifically address the management, scale, quality and service flexibility needs of the new generation of IP video providers.

In a TV delivery network, RGB's VMG provides a platform for very high-density, scalable, unified video processing. It accommodates both broadcast and on-demand video from multiple sources and consisting of varying formats, resolutions and bit rates. The VMG processes the video content in real time, making it suitable for transport across various wireline and wireless networks with varying bandwidth constraints. It also allows for delivery to various types of end-user video display devices, making 'three screen' delivery a reality. The VMG does all of this while maintaining the highest video quality-of-experience (QoE).

Maximizing Revenue Potential with MPEG-4/H.264 and MPEG-2 Advanced Processing

At the heart of the VMG is an unparalleled, high-capacity MPEG-2 and MPEG-4/H.264 video processing engine. In combination with its IP multicast and unicast intelligence, the VMG provides a multitude of advanced video processing features in a single chassis, including video grooming for creating customized channel line ups, re-multiplexing of channels, transrating/rateshaping, transcoding, program switching and quality-of-service (QoS).

The VMG's high-density transrating functionality enable operators to deliver SD or HD content from various sources to a large number of subscribers in their network – which otherwise may not be serviceable due to bandwidth limitations, set-top box type, or video decoder-imposed constraint – thereby maximizing TV revenue potential at the lowest cost of ownership.

The VMG supports network evolution needs utilizing its flexible transcode and re-code support. It performs any operation between MPEG-4/H.264 and MPEG-2, at various screen resolutions, ranging from high definition 1920 x 1080 all the way down to picture-in-picture (PIP) and handheld device resolutions. Furthermore, VMG transcoding is best-in-class for its high quality and capacity, allowing for the repurposing of up to 144 high definition input streams into over 400 output streams, all within a single chassis. This capability allows complete channel lineup transcoding/re-coding, as well as multiple profile output support where one input is coded into different resolutions, bit rates or compression parameters to handle downstream network and consumer device needs.

MPEG-4/H.264 and MPEG-2 Ad Insertion

The VMG is fully compliant with SCTE 30 and SCTE 35 standards and is interoperable with leading ad servers. The VMG is ideally suited for both ad insertion systems centrally located at the VHO/headend facility for regional ad insertion, as well as for implementing zone-based or subscriber-based targeted advertising at the VSO level.

Leveraging the VMG's seamless splicing capability for multiple screen resolutions and various compression codec support, the VMG also performs digital program substitution, allowing a specific output to be seamlessly switched (spliced) between two different input programs under the control of a standards-based scheduling server

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud

(Amazon EC2)

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) is a web service that provides resizable compute capacity in the cloud. It is designed to make web-scale computing easier for developers.

Amazon EC2’s simple web service interface allows you to obtain and configure capacity with minimal friction. It provides you with complete control of your computing resources and lets you run on Amazon’s proven computing environment. Amazon EC2 reduces the time required to obtain and boot new server instances to minutes, allowing you to quickly scale capacity, both up and down, as your computing requirements change. Amazon EC2 changes the economics of computing by allowing you to pay only for capacity that you actually use. Amazon EC2 provides developers the tools to build failure resilient applications and isolate themselves from common failure scenarios.
